Across 123 Keywords

By Douglas Lord 26 March 2026 Series 03 · Case Studies avantix.com.au

Avantix is Australia's leading document scanning and digitisation company. When we started working together, they were ranking well on Google but almost invisible in AI-generated search results. This is the story of how we changed that — and what 145 top-3 rankings, 123 of them inside Google AI Overview, actually looks like in practice.

What makes this unusual

123 of Avantix's 126 position 1 rankings are inside Google AI Overview — not the traditional blue-link organic results below it. AI Overview sits above every other result on the page. These are not just good rankings. They are the highest possible placement on Google for a search query.

Who is Avantix

Avantix is an Australian-owned document scanning and digitisation company with over 20 years of experience. They convert paper records — documents, microfilm, microfiche, medical records, large-format drawings, books — into searchable digital formats for government agencies, hospitals, law firms, and enterprises across Australia.

Duncan Lord co-founded Avantix and has spent over 26 years in the specialised scanning and information processing industry. Avantix holds approved supplier status with the National Archives of Australia, multiple state libraries, and various federal and state government departments. They are a serious, established business competing in a technically complex B2B sector.

That context matters. This is not a local café that got a few extra reviews. This is a national B2B services company that now dominates AI-generated search results across every major service and geographic term in their category.

The Problem

When we began working with Avantix, they had a solid website with good service coverage. But the site was structured for 2019 search — not for the way Google and AI systems work in 2026.

The specific issues were:

The result: strong domain authority, good backlink profile, but poor visibility in AI-generated results — the exact position many established businesses find themselves in as Google shifts from link-based to AI-generated answers.

The Strategy

We approached this as an AI citation problem, not a traditional ranking problem. The goal was not just to rank — it was to become the source Google AI Overview pulls from when someone asks a question about document scanning in Australia.

That required four things done well simultaneously.

1. Schema markup across every page

We implemented Article, FAQ, LocalBusiness, and Service schema on every page of the site using RankMath. This gave Google and AI systems a structured, unambiguous description of what each page is about, who provides the service, and where it is available. Before schema, AI systems had to guess. After schema, they had a clear, machine-readable answer.

2. FAQ content clusters

Every service page was rebuilt to include a FAQ section that directly answered the questions users actually search for. Not generic FAQs — specific, technically accurate answers to the precise questions people type into Google. "How much does microfilm scanning cost?" "What formats does digitised microfilm come in?" "Can you scan documents on-site without them leaving the building?" These answers, marked up with FAQ schema, are exactly what Google AI Overview extracts.

3. City landing pages with real depth

Avantix operates nationally. We created or substantially rebuilt location-specific pages for Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Canberra, Gold Coast, and Perth — each with genuine local content, schema, and FAQ sections. Not thin doorway pages. Pages that actually explain how the scanning service works in that city, which local regulations apply to medical record digitisation, how collection and delivery works.

4. Topical authority clustering

We restructured the content architecture so that related services were clearly linked and cross-referenced. Microfilm scanning, microfiche conversion, and digitisation of archives are different services but they share topical authority. When Google sees a site with deep, consistent, well-structured coverage of a topic area, it treats that site as an authority source. That authority transfers to AI Overview citations.

The Results in Detail

The keyword tracking below is a sample of the 145 keywords where Avantix currently holds a top 3 ranking. The "AI Overview" designation means Avantix is the cited source inside Google's AI-generated answer at the top of the results page.

What This Means for Your Business

The Avantix result is not a fluke and it is not from a loophole. It is the outcome of doing the fundamentals correctly for AI-era search: clear entity definition, structured schema, FAQ content that directly answers real questions, and topical authority that covers a subject area completely.

The businesses that will dominate AI Overview over the next 2–3 years are the ones building this foundation now. The businesses that wait until AI Overview is "mainstream" will find the positions already occupied.

Avantix started this work before most Australian businesses were paying attention to AI visibility. That head start is now represented in 123 position 1 citations across every major keyword in their category.

The key insight

Traditional SEO asks: how do we rank higher than our competitors? AI visibility asks: how do we become the source AI systems cite when they answer a question in our space? These require different strategies. Schema, entity clarity, and FAQ content structure are the foundation of the second question. Backlinks and keyword density are the foundation of the first. Avantix excels at both.

Questions About This Case Study

Frequently Asked

What is Google AI Overview and why does position 1 matter?

Google AI Overview is the AI-generated summary that appears at the very top of Google search results, above all organic listings. It answers the user's question directly and cites a small number of sources. Appearing as the primary cited source in AI Overview is the equivalent of position 1 in traditional SEO — but with significantly higher visibility because it sits above every other result on the page.

How did Avantix achieve 123 AI Overview position 1 rankings?

The strategy combined four elements: schema markup across all service and location pages, FAQ content clusters targeting the specific questions users ask about scanning services, city-specific landing pages for every major Australian market, and technical SEO improvements that gave Google and AI systems a clear, authoritative picture of Avantix's expertise across every service category.

What is the difference between an AI Overview ranking and a regular organic ranking?

A regular organic ranking appears in the blue link results below the AI Overview. An AI Overview ranking means your content is cited inside the AI-generated answer at the very top of the page — before any organic results. For many queries, users read the AI Overview answer and don't scroll further. Being cited in AI Overview is a fundamentally different and more valuable form of visibility.

Can any business achieve AI Overview rankings or is it only for large companies?

Avantix is a mid-sized Australian B2B services company competing against larger national and international players. The AI Overview results came from content structure, schema quality, and topical authority — not from domain size or advertising spend. Any business that invests in proper schema markup, FAQ content, and entity clarity can improve their AI Overview visibility.

What tools did Digital Dominator use to achieve these results for Avantix?

The work combined RankMath for schema implementation, Semrush for keyword tracking, position monitoring, and competitor analysis, Google Search Console for indexing and performance monitoring, Screaming Frog for technical SEO audits, and a content strategy built around topical authority clusters. The keyword data shown in this case study is tracked live via Semrush's position tracking tool.
